Being Known

We human beings like to be known, whether we admit it or not. These pictures are from the walls inside my shed. The man who lived in this house for 40+ years used the walls as his journal. When we moved in and I found these notes right out in the open, I was ecstatic! My husband thought I was goofy, but I just thought it was the neatest thing in the world. There is nothing earth-shattering written on the walls. He wrote down what he planted in his garden, when he bought a vehicle, when the oil was changed and by whom. He wrote down the dates of his career with the local railroad; guy stuff. But I just think it is so cool, that man's history, or part of it is on the walls of our shed; it connects us. He didn't stop there either, his granddaughter's birth date is etched into our cement patio. His named is carved in numerous places in our basement. Did he do it because he "owned" the place, or just out of some need to be remembered? I don't know. I didn't know him personally so I can't say. But I do know he put his words in the places he knew, and I blog...whether anyone sees or cares, we just want to be known!

Bonnie,
I agree, that is pretty interesting to find a written account of the person that was there before. Do you know if any of his family is still in the area? They might like to see that.
So are you going to try and shrink wool sweaters and make something? That seems to be a new farmgirl project spreading across the site.
Pretty soon we will be getting valentines in the mail, isn't that exciting?
Do you have the Mary Jane book?

Believe it or not, the children really didn't care! I even offered to let them "take the walls", and they seemed to think I was daffy! Oh well, to each his own I guess.
I do love those felted purses, Nancy Jo! Maybe someday I will try them. I try not to get to diversified all at once because I won't get ANYTHING done! Right now I have a quilt in the works, some embroidery for the evening and my Valentine's cards to work on. That is plenty for me!
Yes, I have MaryJanes idea book. That is how I found all you lovely friends!

Beemoosie, That is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. How neat that he recorded those things. And, on the walls! I've never heard of anyone doing that before. Well, since the cavemen. :) Very cool.

What a wonderful chronicle and tribute to this life lived there before, it's a treasure. My Dad has received items from a neighbor, now gone, who jotted notes and dates all over eveything. "Yes, I lived, I was here!" Isn't that what we hope to accomplish as quilters?
