Book Review/Belated Momma's Day!

Did you know Paula Deen had an autobiography out? Her "Memoirs"? I jumped right back into the Cookbook of the Month Club for that one!! I wouldn't consider myself a fan of celebrities. Most of the actors I enjoy watching were before my time, and if I was "in" their time and heard the tabloid fodder I may not have enjoyed them as much. I do truly enjoy Paula Deen though. If you don't know, she owns a restaurant in Savannah, Ga and has her own cooking show on Food Network. Quite honestly, I fell in love with her accent, and her smile. Some people think it's sickenly sweet, but I am just mesmerised each time I watch! My mom's "people" are from Kentucky, and I have had this wanna be southern streak in me all my life. Paula just speaks to that! Love the food, enjoy her immensely. I don't even watch the show very often. It's on at 4:00 up here and that just seems to be prime time for ball games, dinner prepartions or what have you. But I check in with Paula every once in a while, and have quite a few of the cookbooks.

I have just a few pages left to read in her book. She really put herself out there, "warts and all" as she puts it. Paula had some seriously bad times in her life, and made some bad mistakes, but she kept pressing forward. To me that's what life is about, pressing forward. In the Bible, Paul encourages us to keep pressing forward, forgetting about what lies in the past. Every stupid mistake we have made, "Forgetta bout it!!", the junk people have done to us, "Forgetta bout it"!! Just keep pressing on, doing your best, leaning on the Lord!

Ok, back to the book...if you like biographies, read it. If you like Paula Deen, read it. I will tell ya though, she tells many details in her life, and they are not all pretty. She swears too. If that would bother you even in a biography, don't read it. I wouldn't put up with that in a fiction novel, or even a biography where I was expecting it from a person (say like a comedian who tries to shock you). I truly believe Ms. Deen wasn't trying to shock anyone, just be her real self. I really enjoyed the book. I just came a way feeling NO ONE is stuck in their circumstances if they choose not to be.

Had to grab a couple more of her and her boys cookbooks!

So how was your Mother's Day weekend? Mine was lovely and crazy all rolled into one! I can't believe it's Monday all ready! Early Saturday morning, my DH was up early getting ready for a golf tournament. He doesn't have that luxury very often. I laid there and stretched and yawned, "I should get up and go get groceries early." If I got up early, did the groceries, I'd have plenty of time to set up for the 4Hers coming that afternoon. "Sorry", he says, "G-man has a baseball game at 9:00."

And so it goes! Ballgame, emergency haircut for G-man, cleaning, 4H THEN we got groceries! But was it just groceries, of course not! DD came along to hit a couple stores looking for dancing shoes!! It was a fun day though! The quilts are coming along nicely for the 4Hers. I just have to constantly remind mom's and daughters both that perfection is not what we are aiming for here!! We are supposed to be having fun!

Sunday was full of a Mother's Day Picnic at my niece's. It was a beautiful day with my in-laws (yup, I love 'em!). The weather was perfect and there was plenty of good food. Then I came home to three, count 'em THREE full garbage bags of beautiful fabric that my Aunt was getting rid of! Oh the possibilities that flew through my head as I sorted through my goodies!

Hope your weekend was lovely!

~Blessings

I am looking forward to reading the book. I don't often get to watch her shows (have you seen Paula's Party - it's an hour long and comes on Friday evenings at 10pm on Food Network).

If you're ever in Savannah, you MUST treat yourself to eating at the restaurant. We've not been to the new location, but ate at the old location many times. If she's in town, she flits and floats amongst the guests just chatting away. She is a delight!

Hi!

I'm just seeing today the comment you left on my blog the other day about organics (just getting back online today). I'm still learning every day, but would be happy to answer any questions you have if I'm able. :-)

Dear B,
We stay in Savannah/Tybee Island when journeying home to MsDaisy'. I have not watched her cooking show but carried my momma to the restaurant, met her and her brother's or is it uncles? Bubbas? Ya know Lady and Boys place has turned into a all ya can eat trough... and a line that wrapping around the block... and souvenirs and busses...disappointing when I love me some southern read butter applied cooking.
If ya want true southern cuisine and ambience to match our hospitality ya gotta go to Mrs Wilkes Boardinhouse... she died a couple years ago but the place still carries her spirit. ooo and I loved Elizabeths on 37th. We stopped there on the way back from my neices wedding two weeks ago.
